A few years ago, one of my close family friends who always wanted to be an entrepreneur came to my family look for investments in a new product he was trying to produce. He had come up with an idea of making hookah mouthpieces out of candy that you would slowly dissolve away as you used the hookah. It was interesting to see someone I know have an idea that I had never really thought about, and although I didn't necessarily think it would be a successful product, it was still a cool idea. My brother and father ended up not investing in the product and I think after a few months of trying, my family friend eventually gave up on the idea and just moved on. Although it didn't work out very well, it was interesting to see someone come up with their own idea and try to make it work and have that drive to be successful.
I enrolled in this class partially because I needed to take a summer class that is online (I'm not going to lie!) and partially because learning how to become a better entrepreneur can only be beneficial for my future career. It is always an advantage to be able to think critically and be able to solve problems that other people have by coming up with a service or a product that they need.
I agree it is always cool to see someone bring their ideas to life! And failure is a part of the process so good for them. Being able to think critically and solve problems is something I really want to learn better as well. Good job on this and good luck in this class!
ReplyDeleteJared,
ReplyDeleteHello, I'm your TA for this course, Rachel. I really enjoyed reading your entrepreneurship story! That's really cool that you had a friend who tried to start their own business. Even if it's not successful, it's still a learning experience.
I appreciate your honest on why you took this class! Hopefully it turns out to be a positive experience.
Jared,
ReplyDeleteI am in this class for the exact same reasons. It is required for me to take this class, but I also know that it will be beneficial in my future. I have never been very interested in hookah, but reading your blog, that is a very interesting idea.

Hi Jared,
ReplyDeleteI think you brought up a really good point. A lot of people focus on the positive sides of startups and investments but don't focus on the negatives. Looking and learning from failure is important and a major key to building a successful company.
