Identifying Local Opportunities

1. U.S. helping candidates fend off hackers

http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CF63D1B4CB26E8?p=AWNB

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security sent experts to assist the remaining presidential candidates in fending off hacking attempts. Apparently there has a been a threat of foreign hackers hacking into the files of Trump, Clinton, or Sanders and revealing information that shouldn't be revealed.

The problem in this story is the threat of a foreign cyber-attack and the potential effect it could have on the United States and the presidential race.

Th United States government along with each candidate has this problem because any revealed files could have major ramifications. You could also say the people of the U.S. have this problem too because if foreign hackers release all the awful stuff Hilary Clinton has done after she has received the nomination, the country would just end up in chaos.

 2. Fruitworms can sour tomatoes

http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15D00BC551C5E570?p=AWNB

Somebody wrote or e-mailed to a writer of the newspaper and asked what was causing their tomatoes that they were growing to rot and die. She/he wanted to know why holes would form on the tomatoes before they eventually would rot. The newspaper writer responded saying it was being caused by "fruitworms" such as caterpillars.

The problem in the story is dealing with animals that dangerous for plants that you are growing at home. Another problem to consider would be how difficult it is for people growing plants at home to get access to this information without going through quite a bit of work.

The people who have these problems are people who are just trying to grow some plants at home for their own use.

3. Activists: SeaWorld whales could retire in sanctuary

http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CF63D0C5874498?p=AWNB

PETA and a new project called the "Whale Sanctuary Project" want Seaworld to move their killer whales to a sanctuary. The sanctuary would be a sectioned off area in the ocean where the killer whales can go to "retire" and enjoy their time after being kept in captivity for so long. Seaworld has responded by saying this is practically the same as captivity, and a previous killer whale release didn't go very well so there are arguments on both sides.

The problem in this story is how to handle the ethical treatment of killer whales. Is it right for Seaworld to keep those killer whales in captivity or should they be released? Would it be best for them to be kept in a sanctuary? Who would actually pay for it? These are all problems that no one really has the answer for yet.

I think society as a whole has this problem because it's up to everyone to decide what is acceptable treatment of animals both in and out of captivity.

4. Orange schools strengthen security access to buildings

http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CF1D2E2C9F2C08?p=AWNB

The Orange County school district realized that pretty much everybody had access to their school campuses and that probably isn't safe for students. The school district is making changes to help fix this problem by requiring guests to show government-issued identification and having a more strict policy regarding faculty and staff access. They also updated their protocol regarding past employees having their access revoked.

The problem in this story is the risk that some random person could easily get on to a school campus and pose a serious threat to students.

The school district along with the students and staff at each school have this problem.

5. Residents leery about new plans for San Pedro

http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CF0EFE46F36370?p=AWNB

Residents of San Pedro do not welcome a massive land development plan in their area that is supposed to build over 500 new homes and various other complexes. The residents have been used to their rural lifestyle with having a ton of extra space and land. They think that the development will destroy the "character" of the area. Most of the residents appear to own big areas of land and keep a few animals.

The problem in this story is the impact the development of land might have on the residents and the area itself. The current residents think that the development will ruin the area and it's character.

The residents of the San Pedro area have this problem.

Bug List

1. It bugs me when I go to the beach and get in the water and my bathing suit gets filled with sand and I am uncomfortable for the rest of the day.

Why?

This bug exists because my bathing suit isn't filtering out the sand well enough.

2. It bugs me when someone goes obnoxiously lower than the speed limit in the fast lane on the highway.

Why?

This bug exists because the speed limits aren't regulated that closely and slow drivers are not always encouraged to go in one of the right lanes.

3. It bugs me when I want to go to class at UF and my commute is practically 40 minutes because I have to drive and park in the park and ride lot and then take a bus instead of being able to park on campus.

Why?

This bug exists because UF has almost no available parking on campus.

4. It bugs me when I want to take an easy summer class for the credits because I am also doing an intense internship and I find out my class ends up having a ton of homework.

Why?

This bug exists because I didn't plan well enough ahead and could not research what the class would be like easily enough.

5. It bugs me when I want to eat a strawberry shortcake ice cream bar and I take a bite and it's so cold that it hurts my teeth and makes it not enjoyable.

Why?

This bug exists because my teeth are too sensitive to the cold and can't handle the rapid change in temperature.

6. It REALLY bugs me when I want to eat at the Chik-Fil-A on Archer Rd and the line is really long so the drive through line ends up combining with the line of people trying to exit to Archer Rd. People don't realize that you can't block the intersection so they honk at me and get out of their car and yell at me even though if I moved forward all I would be doing is blocking the intersection and making the whole situation worse.

Why?

This bug exists because of the layout and design of the Chik-Fil-A parking lot is problematic and also because people apparently can't read signs or understand how traffic works but I am not sure if that is fixable.

7. It bugs me when I want to see all my old high school friends over spring break and maybe do something fun together, but for some reason UF decides to schedule our spring break at a different time than every other Florida school so it isn't possible.

Why?

This bug exists because whoever plans the schedule at UF isn't connected to what the UF student body wants and there needs to be more communication in regards to that.

8. It bugs me when I want to listen to music on my phone in my car, but my AUX cord can't be plugged into my phone while it has an iPhone case on so I have to take it off every time.

Why?

This bug exists because the AUX cord I bought didn't have the proper dimensions to be used by the majority of people that have cases on their iPhones.

9. It bugs me when my supervisor at my internship asks me to do something I clearly haven't been trained in and have no clue what to do.

Why?

This bug exists because my supervisor doesn't understand what I can and cannot do even though I have communicated multiple times that I am not an accounting major.

10. It bugs me when I am back home from college and my dad goes out of town, and the hot tub randomly breaks while he's gone so I can't use it.

Why?

This bug exists because the hot tub is prone to breaking and wasn't designed in the best way.

11. It bugs me when I want to eat delicious candy and other bad foods and I can't because it's too bad for me.

Why?

This bug exists because the reason the candy and food is so delicious is because the things they're made out of aren't good for you.

12. It bugs me when my dad doesn't want to turn on the A/C because it's too expensive and my room gets too hot.

Why?

This bug exists because the price of air conditioning is high and economic times are tough on all of us and you have to adjust in every way you can.

13. It bugs me when I am on my way to work and I end up being late because I had to stop and wait for a train to pass.

Why?

This bug exists because train times are erratic and I don't know which morning I am going to run into the train and which morning I am not going to.

14. It bugs me when I have to go through 4 speed bumps on each level of the parking garage I have to park at for work.

Why?

This bug exists because the company who had that parking garage put there didn't want people to go fast and wanted it to be safe for everyone.

15. It bugs me when I go to Panera Bread and expect to order something that tastes good, but I end up eating something that tastes like I found it on the ground outside and costs $15.

Why?

This bug exists either because I am not good at deciding what I like to eat or because Panera Bread just doesn't serve very good food.

16. It bugs me when people ride the bikes on the sidewalk through a bunch of people that are walking.

Why?

This bug exists because even though bikers are supposed to use the roads and bike lanes, they don't get punished often enough to deter them from biking through Turlington full speed.

17. It bugs me when I see a soft serve ice cream machine and the only flavors they have are vanilla, chocolate, and mixed.

Why?

This bug exists because the other flavors, such as strawberry, just aren't popular enough for companies to see it as worthwhile to invest in extra flavors.

18. It bugs me when I try to find a pair of dress socks to wear in the morning and I can barely tell which socks even match because they all look so similar.

Why?

This bug exists because dress socks are just generally similar in nature which leads to a higher chance of getting them mixed up and losing one piece of a pair.

19. It bugs me when I have to sit in the back seat of my friends car and I have no leg room because the car is so small.

Why?

This bug exists because the car my friend has (mustang) wasn't designed for a grown man to sit in the back seat and be comfortable.

20. It bugs me when I take a test and the person next to me as sick and can't stop sniffling the whole time.

Why?

This bug exists because rules are so strict on re-taking tests, that people would rather take a test sick than try to get is rescheduled or take a make-up.

I found it a little difficult to come up with things that bugged me once I got towards the end of the list, but I guess I can get annoyed pretty easily so a lot of things bug me. It's interesting to think about how many of these bugs are actually "fixable" and aren't just a manifestation of my personality.

My Entrepreneurship Story

A few years ago, one of my close family friends who always wanted to be an entrepreneur came to my family look for investments in a new product he was trying to produce. He had come up with an idea of making hookah mouthpieces out of candy that you would slowly dissolve away as you used the hookah. It was interesting to see someone I know have an idea that I had never really thought about, and although I didn't necessarily think it would be a successful product, it was still a cool idea. My brother and father ended up not investing in the product and I think after a few months of trying, my family friend eventually gave up on the idea and just moved on. Although it didn't work out very well, it was interesting to see someone come up with their own idea and try to make it work and have that drive to be successful.

I enrolled in this class partially because I needed to take a summer class that is online (I'm not going to lie!) and partially because learning how to become a better entrepreneur can only be beneficial for my future career. It is always an advantage to be able to think critically and be able to solve problems that other people have by coming up with a service or a product that they need.
