Identifying Local Opportunities

1. U.S. helping candidates fend off hackers

http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CF63D1B4CB26E8?p=AWNB

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security sent experts to assist the remaining presidential candidates in fending off hacking attempts. Apparently there has a been a threat of foreign hackers hacking into the files of Trump, Clinton, or Sanders and revealing information that shouldn't be revealed.

The problem in this story is the threat of a foreign cyber-attack and the potential effect it could have on the United States and the presidential race.

Th United States government along with each candidate has this problem because any revealed files could have major ramifications. You could also say the people of the U.S. have this problem too because if foreign hackers release all the awful stuff Hilary Clinton has done after she has received the nomination, the country would just end up in chaos.

 2. Fruitworms can sour tomatoes

http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15D00BC551C5E570?p=AWNB

Somebody wrote or e-mailed to a writer of the newspaper and asked what was causing their tomatoes that they were growing to rot and die. She/he wanted to know why holes would form on the tomatoes before they eventually would rot. The newspaper writer responded saying it was being caused by "fruitworms" such as caterpillars.

The problem in the story is dealing with animals that dangerous for plants that you are growing at home. Another problem to consider would be how difficult it is for people growing plants at home to get access to this information without going through quite a bit of work.

The people who have these problems are people who are just trying to grow some plants at home for their own use.

3. Activists: SeaWorld whales could retire in sanctuary

http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CF63D0C5874498?p=AWNB

PETA and a new project called the "Whale Sanctuary Project" want Seaworld to move their killer whales to a sanctuary. The sanctuary would be a sectioned off area in the ocean where the killer whales can go to "retire" and enjoy their time after being kept in captivity for so long. Seaworld has responded by saying this is practically the same as captivity, and a previous killer whale release didn't go very well so there are arguments on both sides.

The problem in this story is how to handle the ethical treatment of killer whales. Is it right for Seaworld to keep those killer whales in captivity or should they be released? Would it be best for them to be kept in a sanctuary? Who would actually pay for it? These are all problems that no one really has the answer for yet.

I think society as a whole has this problem because it's up to everyone to decide what is acceptable treatment of animals both in and out of captivity.

4. Orange schools strengthen security access to buildings

http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CF1D2E2C9F2C08?p=AWNB

The Orange County school district realized that pretty much everybody had access to their school campuses and that probably isn't safe for students. The school district is making changes to help fix this problem by requiring guests to show government-issued identification and having a more strict policy regarding faculty and staff access. They also updated their protocol regarding past employees having their access revoked.

The problem in this story is the risk that some random person could easily get on to a school campus and pose a serious threat to students.

The school district along with the students and staff at each school have this problem.

5. Residents leery about new plans for San Pedro

http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CF0EFE46F36370?p=AWNB

Residents of San Pedro do not welcome a massive land development plan in their area that is supposed to build over 500 new homes and various other complexes. The residents have been used to their rural lifestyle with having a ton of extra space and land. They think that the development will destroy the "character" of the area. Most of the residents appear to own big areas of land and keep a few animals.

The problem in this story is the impact the development of land might have on the residents and the area itself. The current residents think that the development will ruin the area and it's character.

The residents of the San Pedro area have this problem.

  2. I enjoyed reading the local opportunities that you listed in your blog. Having hackers accessing private files will indeed cause a lot of turmoil for everyone. Online information should be kept private and not be easily accessed. I like how orange schools is strengthening their security access to its buildings, it is very important to have a strong security system at a school since anyone can easily interact with a student if the school does not have a strong security system. Here is the link to my post for the local opportunities that I found: http://yessiblogging.blogspot.com/2016/05/identifying-local-opportunities.html

  4. Jared,

The article about the Orange County School District is interesting. I live in South Florida and my kids attend the Broward School District. I feel that more measures should be implemented to keep our kids safe. My daughters’ middle school recently had the resource police officer removed due to budget constraints and I think that is wrong. Why would they cut in an area where our kids are not protected because of it? Every school should have a resource police officer full time and strict measures taken to give anybody access to the property.

  5. Hey Jared,
I enjoyed the articles that you chose. They were interesting. I think that a lot more schools should think about the safety of the children. At most any school, everyone can just walk in regardless of who they are. There should be some type of security measure to prevent people from just walking in. As far as the whales at Seaworld goes, I think that what's best for the whales and their safety and happiness should be what's taken into consideration. It should not be about who is right or wrong in the argument but the life of the whales.

  6. Jared,

You had some pretty interesting articles for this week's assignment. One that really stuck out to me was the safety of Orange County school campuses. The elementary school I went to at home was an outdoor campus, where anyone could just walk right in an walk around with never having to go through an office let alone any building. With so many tragic events, like shootings at schools, the school now has fenced their entire campus. You really did get a hold of an article that allows us to see an opportunity. Think about all of the jobs that can be made available from school security to construction of safer campuses and buildings.

  7. Hey Jared,
I liked reading about your articles. The one that caught my attention was the one about sea world. Another student had also written about sea world as well. In their article, they were talking about activists groups like PETA suing the park for their treatment of the whales. I am glad to see that this park is doing the best it can to provide a nice place for the whales.
